When you have asphalt that you are trying to maintain, it is important that you understand the different methods that can be used to get the job done. Sealcoating is hands down, the best way to protect and maintain your asphalt. However, there is more than one way to do sealcoat. You can do crack sealing or slurry sealing. Andersen Asphalt & Striping is here to talk about the difference between these two and when they would be used.
Crack Sealing Asphalt
Over time, you might notice that your asphalt surface starts to develop some cracks. If this is the case, you want to repair them as soon as possible so that they don’t continue to get worse. Factors like weather, the sun, traffic and natural wear and tear can be the cause of these cracks forming. It is vital to your asphalt to fill in and seal any cracks that are starting to form. If you don’t, you could be facing premature replacement down the road. It is far less expensive to take care of them right away. There are two different types of sealants that are used when cracks are present, hot pour and cold pour.
– Hot Pour: These sealants are heated before they are applied to the cracks in the asphalt surface. The heat allows them to flow freely and create a tough hold with the asphalt. The bonding effects are enhanced by the heat.
– Cold Pour: This type of sealant is applied at room temperature. This is going to be the ideal way to seal smaller cracks in the asphalt. This sealer contains silicone based materials.
Slurry Sealing Asphalt
If you are looking for broader asphalt maintenance, slurry sealing is the way to go. This would be appropriate for asphalt that isn’t filled with large cracks or potholes. It is a thin layer of asphalt emulsion that is mixed with crushed aggregate and other additives. It can help protect your asphalt against minor cracks and damage as well as provide your asphalt surface with traction. The emulsion creates a barrier on your asphalt that can protect it from UV rays, water, and oxidation. The added traction that slurry sealing offers can help give the surface more traction and enhance the safety of the asphalt. If you do have some significant cracking in your asphalt surface, you will want to make sure that those cracks are completely fixed before slurry sealing is done.
