Even though most people don’t realize it, there are several different types of asphalt out there that are used in many different settings. When most of us think about asphalt, we think about the roads that we drive on or parking lots. However, there are different types of asphalt that are needed for different settings. Andersen Asphalt & Striping is here to talk about the different types of asphalt out there and what they are best used for.
Hot Mix Asphalt
Hot mix asphalt is what most people think about when they think about asphalt. That is because this is what is used to make roadways. It is a flexible type of asphalt that is made up of an asphalt binder and a mix of coarse and fine aggregate. Before this type of asphalt is applied, it must reach the high temperature of 350 degrees. Once it has been applied, it is completely weatherproof though. The trick to installing this kind of asphalt is the fact that it cools quickly so it must be laid with precision. It shouldn’t only be done by a professional.
Warm Mix Asphalt
This asphalt is used by some companies because it is more comfortable to use. It is applied when it reaches a lower temperature of 120 degrees. Some companies like to use this type of asphalt because it doesn’t cool off as fast as the hot mix will. It has the ability to hold its temperature for a longer period of time making it easier to use in some instances. This asphalt creates less greenhouse gases which makes it better for the environment.
Cold Mix Asphalt
If there is ever an emergency with asphalt that requires a repair right away, cold mix is a great solution. It is never used in instances where it would be a permanent fix. This is used often by companies during months that hot or warm mix asphalt can’t sustain its temperature. Cold mix asphalt is easily removed when the temperature is right to fix the asphalt with a more permanent solution.
Porous Asphalt
Porous asphalt is used in places like playgrounds, parking lots, sidewalks, and driveways. It is designed to allow moisture to seep through the top layer of asphalt to a layer of gravel below it. It can be helpful to use this in areas that have a difficult time with storm water management. In these areas, porous asphalt may prove to be a necessary solution.
