Asphalt Laying & Paving Procedure in Mountain’s Edge, NV; Break Up Old Pavement to Final Roll of New

There are several steps that are involved when you are talking about the installation of brand new asphalt. With such an involved process, it is important that people are aware of the steps required to get the job done whether you are getting a new driveway or the street in front of your home is being replaced. Andersen Asphalt & Striping is here to talk about it so that you can know what to expect when the project is underway near you.

Step 1: Demo to Break Up & Remove Old Asphalt

Before new asphalt can be laid down, the old needs to be torn up and removed. This is done with some heavy machinery like bobcats, forklifts and other equipment. Once it has been torn up, the debris is then removed. Much of the old asphalt can often be recycled and reused to help make it an eco-friendly choice.

Step 2: Grading, Drainage & Sloping

Once the old asphalt is removed, it’s time to ensure that the grade and slope of the surface is right. Without this being just right, the drainage will not be right. It is important that this is done well because water is the number one issue when it comes to potholes and premature damage to asphalt.

Step 3: Sub Base Preparation

Many people don’t realize that preparing the subbase is the most important part of this entire process. This gives a stable surface and foundation for the asphalt that is getting installed. Stabilizing the subbase and compaction is essential to the success of the asphalt.

Step 4: Asphalt Binder & Surface Course

Once the subbase is taken care of and there are most definitely not any soft spots located anywhere on the surface, there is a binder layer put down. This layer is made up of larger aggregate and oil and is key in ensuring the surface is durable. It is a strong foundation for the new asphalt.

Step 5: Asphalt Laying Procedure

Now it’s time to put the new asphalt surface down. This is comprised of small aggregate, sand and oil. This is the rich black asphalt that looks so attractive and fine tuned. It provides vehicles with a smooth ride that is like none other.

Step 6: Asphalt Transition & Butt Joint Detail

There is always a transition that needs to be smoothed out when putting down new asphalt. Sometimes the new asphalt butts up to driveways, sidewalks and even the street. This transition needs to be a smooth one.

Step 7: Final Roll of Asphalt

Once all the transitions and butt joints are in and smooth, it’s time for the final roll. A roller truck is used to ensure there aren’t any small bumps or stones that are sticking up. You want your new asphalt surface to be completely smooth.
