What is Asphalt Coring & Resurfacing of a Cracked or Patched Road, Parking Lot or Driveway Pavement in Reno, NV?

When you have asphalt that is 8 to 10 years old, you will want to consider resurfacing the asphalt. Asphalt needs maintenance especially once the asphalt reaches a certain age. There are many different needs that asphalt will develop over time. Asphalt resurfacing can correct many different asphalt problems. Andersen Asphalt & Striping will share what asphalt resurfacing is and why it is essential in maintaining your asphalt.

Should I Resurface or Replace My Asphalt Driveway?

Asphalt resurfacing, which sometimes causes overlaying, or reconstruction is an alternative to total asphalt replacement. An asphalt resurfacing is when a new layer of asphalt is laid over the existing pavement surface. This new layer of asphalt is about two inches thick, which will provide a strong surface to extend the life of the asphalt. Asphalt resurfacing is an optimal method to repair asphalt that has oxidized. As long as the asphalt has a good subgrade that hasn’t oxidized, asphalt resurfacing is the perfect repair option.

What is an Asphalt Coring Test?

Asphalt resurfacing isn’t possible when there is major asphalt damage present such as when the asphalt has damages in the form of cracks, alligator cracking, or other similar asphalt damages. To know if you can resurface the asphalt there is a few steps a contractor will do first. To know if the asphalt can be resurfaced, the contractor will perform a core-testing which determines the condition of the asphalt. If there is damage or other problems present it may be possible to repair the cracks and then resurface the asphalt. However, in most cases the asphalt may need to be scraped up and replaced altogether.

How Do You Care for Resurfaced Asphalt?

Once the asphalt condition has been determined and the contractor feels like the asphalt is a candidate for resurfacing, you can then decide if you want to commit to resurfacing the asphalt. Along with asphalt resurfacing, the owner will need to implement a pavement maintenance plan. It is much better to maintain the asphalt versus investing in resurfacing or total asphalt replacement. There are many ways to maintain pavement. When potholes form, you should quickly have the pothole filled in. Cracks, if detected soon enough, can be filled in. If the cracks become too deep or are too wide, then cracks cannot be repaired. When the cracks become to big the asphalt will need to be replaced. Another major maintenance service that can be performed is sealcoating. If you maintain these problem as they occur you can extend the life of the pavement.

Keep Asphalt Pavement Clean

For those who manage asphalt such as parking lots or roads, it is equally important to keep the asphalt clean. Make sure to clean off trash and debris using asphalt sweepers and other road cleaning equipment. Parking lots are exposed to oil and emissions as well as other types of filth such as bird droppings, food, and more. Having the parking clean can help prevent the asphalt from degrading.
