One of the biggest reasons that people turn to asphalt surfaces is because they are so durable. It is no wonder that so many of our roads are constructed using asphalt. No matter how durable asphalt is, that doesn’t mean there aren’t going to be problems that arise and a need for repairs from time to time. There are a few different asphalt patching and repair techniques that are used when these situations arise. Andersen Asphalt & Striping is here to talk about that many techniques that are used to repair and patch asphalt surfaces.
Is a Cold Patch Any Good?
This is the patching that is usually performed by homeowners on their own. It is quite simple to do as all you need is some asphalt material, a tamper and a shovel to do it. The problem with this type of patching is that it is not a long-term solution. This should only be done when you are trying to get by before you can have the pros come in and do the final patch. It’s easy to do and will work in a pinch if only for a little while.
Asphalt Skin Patching
This option is one that will last a little longer than a cold patch will, but it is still not considered to be a long term fix. This is just like a band-aid for asphalt. This is only a surface repair so if there is extreme weather, it likely won’t hold up.
Infrared Asphalt Restoration
When home and business owners turn to infrared asphalt restoration, it is a permanent solution for their asphalt repair. They often choose something like this so that they don’t have to pay more than once to have their asphalt problem fixed. It must be done by asphalt professionals that have the specialized equipment to get the job done. It requires a heater that heats the asphalt patch getting repaired. The good news is that temperature doesn’t play a role in the effectiveness of this type of repair. This is the ideal fix for pothole repair.
How Do You Cut & Remove Asphalt
If the damage that you have on your asphalt surface is extensive, infrared asphalt restoration isn’t going to cut it. When you have widespread problems like alligator cracking, you may need to have more extensive work done. In this case, the cracked and damaged asphalt is cut out and removed. Hot mix asphalt is then put in its place and compacted in with the existing asphalt surface. Once this is complete it is immediately sealed so no further damage occurs.
