Why Should Asphalt Roads Be Smooth in Summerlin South, NV? What Causes Rough & Uneven Pavement?

When you have an asphalt surface, it is vital that the surface is perfectly flat and smooth. Of course, you want it this way so that it looks its best, but you also want it this way because it will help the asphalt last longer as well. Andersen Asphalt & Striping LLC is here to talk about why it is so important that your asphalt surface is perfectly flat and some of the causes that result in uneven asphalt surfaces.

Why are Smooth Roads & Paving Important?

There are many reasons that it’s important that your asphalt surface is perfectly flat and smooth. Most people want it that way because it looks so much better, but the fact of the matter is, it can affect the longevity of your asphalt when it isn’t flat. For instance, when it rains, water will pool up on the areas that aren’t smooth. Moisture is one of the main causes for asphalt breakdown and failure. As temperatures change, the asphalt experiences expanding and contracting as well. This can put an extreme amount of pressure on the asphalt and cause it to crack and buckle.

Why is Asphalt Surface Uneven & Rough?

If you have an asphalt surface that isn’t smooth, there could be a few different causes for it.
– Too Little Asphalt: If you have ever seen asphalt that is in liquid form, it looks thick and creamy. Asphalt is there to serve one purpose, to bind aggregate together. If there isn’t enough asphalt to be that binder, you may find that it literally starts to crumble apart. When liquid asphalt is poured over the aggregate, it should cover 2 inches of aggregate to give you that solid and sturdy surface you’re looking for.
– Not Enough Compaction: If you see that there are loose rocks to be found all over your asphalt surface, it is likely that the surface wasn’t compacted enough. It is important that when the last layer of asphalt is added to the top of your asphalt surface, it isn’t just left to dry. It needs to be compacted with a roller or a tamper for smaller spots. This will smooth out any gaps and bubbles that could cause problems down the road.
– Wrong Aggregate Mix: It is vital that you have the right aggregate mixture for your asphalt surface. The aggregate mixture should be comprised of crushed rocks and smaller particulates like sand. Without the right mixture, you will have gaps in your sub-base, and it could cause and uneven surface.
